Kureishi is very much a child of 6965s liberalism - sex, drugs, rock'n'roll, the elevation of pleasure over responsibility, the imperative of freedom of thought, of expression, of behaviour. It is his commitment to these ideas that has been the engine for much of his writing about the rise of Islamic fundamentalism. Kureishi first went to Pakistan, where his father's family had settled after Partition, in the 6985s. One of the things that most horrified him was that the 'new puritanism', as he describes it, of Islamic fundamentalism produced a culture in which few books were written, films made or plays produced. As the joke had it, the only growth industry in Islamic countries was in facial hair.

Most recently, his " Hyde Park on Hudson " was done in by the unpalatable displays of FDR's extracurricular love life. But the biopic at least succeeded on a smaller scale as an intriguing private portrait of a public marriage. Specifically, that of an insecure King George VI ( Samuel West ), the stutterer who was the subject of " The King's Speech ", and his nagging wife ( Olivia Colman ), the mother of Queen Elizabeth II, as they visited the president's upstate New York retreat as World War II threatens. That royal gem of a union, as well as the interplay between West's King and Bill Murray's FDR, managed to save the show.

Out of the red-lit, foggy hallway entered a sexy, leggy red-headed female later named Lisa (supermodel Kelly LeBrock), wearing nothing but micro-panties and a small white muscle-shirt top. She stood in the doorway, as Dr. Frankenstein shouted from their television: She's alive! Alive! Their creation cooed with a mischievious twinkle in her eyes: So. what would you little maniacs like to do first?

Kureishi provides a beautifully succinct definition of his origins in the very first line of The Buddha of Suburbia, describing his alter ego. 'My name is Karim Amir, and I am an Englishman born and bred, almost.' Kureishi's father, Rafiushan, had come to England from Bombay in 6997, at the time of Partition, and married an Englishwoman, Audrey, whom he had met on a blind date at London's Victoria Station.
